La femme qui se cognait dans les portes, Olween Fouéré joue Paula Spencer...
From July-December 2008 during the French presidency of the European Union, the cultures of the twenty-seven member states of the union will be on show throughout France and elsewhere. The French presidency’s wish is to provide the French public with a European Cultural Season which will highlight the creative diversity of all European cultures as well as portraying the strong identity of a heritage which is, to a large extent, shared.
It will feature an adaptation in French of two Roddy Doyle novels; “The Woman Who Walked into Doors” and “Paula Spencer”. This adaptation is the work of French author and director, Michel Abécassis in collaboration with the Franco-Irish actress, Olwen Fouéré. The Irish Eyes caught up with Michel Abécassis recently to see what lay behind this wonderful Franco-Irish project:
The Irish Eyes meet Olween Fouéré, Paula Spencer at the theater.
Irish Eyes : Olwen, how do you see yourself? As an Irish or French actress, or as a Franco Irish actress?
Olween Fouéré : None of those definitions seem to fit. I think most artists work beyond categorisation/definition.
I.E. : - Does the language change your approach to the role?
O. F. : Yes.
I.E. :What is the main difference between Irish and French theater?
O. F. : French theater is much more conscious of theatrical form. Rhythm, the musicality of the text, staging, all the fundamental questions of theater as an artform which are linked to the philosophical questions within theater action. In addition, French theatre accepts that audiences are intelligent and that they are not idiots that must be made to tremble with superficial emotion. Irish thaeter has a tendency to do that. That said, Irish playwrights are second to none.
I.E. :- How did the meeting come about, and why did you accept the role?
N. O. : I was suggested for the Tandem project which is part of the saison culturelle européennne and I was asked to meet Michel Abécassis. We met in Ireland first, then later in Paris. We discussed several texts and chose the idea of staging an adaptation of these two books by Roddy Doyle. Michel wanted it to be a monologue. We worked with this idea for a while and then we dived in. There it is.
I.E. :The subject, (adaptation of the two Roddy Doyle books), is difficult and not often delt with.
The statistics show an increase in violence towards women and of female alcoholism. Did you accept the role as a millitant?
N. O. : I accepted the role because Paula Spencer is a survivor. She has great humour and an extraordinary life force, a force that is palpable in many of Roddy Doyle's written characters.
I.E. : - Both the author and director are male, do you think the play would have been different if they had been female ?
N. O. : Yes.
I.E. : - In spite of the violence and despair there remains a sense of hope. How do you analyse this?
N. O. : It is the hope of life. Life is short. She has children. She often forced herself to continue living for them. And also, she never stopped loving the man who beat her. Love catches us and, despite the circumstances, it is the most transcendent thing of life and the most elevated force of all.
I.E. : There have been many performances of the play, have you modified your interpretation of the role?
N. O. : Yes, it develops all the time. That is too complex and detailed a matter to go into here!
I.E. : Why should one go and see this play ?
N. O. : To laugh , sing, maybe cry and feel the force of life.
It only remains for us to go and see this play.... to laugh, to sing , and to cry ....
At any rate it will be an emotional experience.
